Click and Sew by Wild Ginger Software, Inc.

Screen ShotSimplicity at its Finest

Slide Show Available

By Sharla Hicks Revised © 2008

Click & Sew has undergone a revamp of the software that incorporates all the new technology bells and whistles that a computer has to offer. Pattern 1101, 1102 and 1201 are techno packed with movies and PDF files to get you moving right along with your pattern drafting project.

For the sewer who wants to make an investment in a single pattern that has numerous variations already built in and will always fit no matter the body changes, selecting a Click and Sew Pattern by Wild Ginger Software is the perfect solution. The cost is not that much greater than a regular pattern but each time, the pattern can be made to fit the current you.

The operative word to using these CDs is they are intuitive. I just seemed to instinctively know which button would do what I wanted. This is an indication of a well written software that shows Wild Ginger Software spent a lot of time working out the interface to be user friendly.

Screen ShotEach pattern is based on a primary foundation but allows additional flexibility to change the style of the sleeve, neckline, with or without darts, waistline choices and more. (See each CD for the specifics for each pattern.) The versatility built into the Click and Sew Patterns allows the same pattern to become many pattern styles all from the same CD. Note that each allows you to customize ease (how loose or form fitting) for each pattern. In some of the feedback I read from the users of the program, some indicate they think they selected too much ease when making the patterns the first time. So you may wish to do a quick test garment to help you determine how much ease you really want.

Using the CD is easy. Select the area to visit from the opening menu and next buttons take you from one section to the next in the logical progression expected when working with a pattern.

User's Guide Button takes you a screen of how-to buttons with instruction how to get started with the software to trouble shooting fitting issues that may arise.

For those of you who prefer the spoken work and visual learning of the program. Go straight to Getting Started Movie.

Then use the each of the other buttons to a PDF file that opens with Adobe Acrobat. I was amazed by how extensive the fitting guide was with a long list of trouble shooting choices that address a multitude of fitting issues that I have run into when constructing clothing. (See example below)

Program Operations

Now let's move on to program operations. The first place to start will be the Measurements.

Click on Pattern Drafter on the Opening Screen to go to the the first step for an accurate pattern, the measurement screen. The screen includes excellent graphics that show you exactly how and where to measure. Clicking on each measurement box brings up a graphic that shows you how to measure your body. Using your OWN custom measurements means that ALL sizes and shapes and little body glitches are addressed when creating the pattern.

Menu measurement screen to begin pattern drafting

If you are still confused about measurements, go to the Movies button. It is quite amazing how much help is provided in the program. Here is a list of the movies available for measurement help. Each area of the program is equally endowed with large help movie menus.

Movie list for measurements
Movie List for measurements

Remember, if you still have questions you can always go back to the extensive PFD files for measuring.

Bottom line, this is a value packed program for the cost point.

Each screen is very specific and allows you to pick everything needed for a specific task. For example, the yardage and pattern layout page are all on the same screen. Logical.

Screen Shot Screen Shot

How many times have you positioned and repositioned a pattern piece to optimize placement on a fabric with and without the fold. This software allows you to do this on the computer BEFORE you move to the large pattern pieces. Again the user interface is very logical, setup your fabric dimensions, determine whether the fabric will be folded or not and then tweak away with the placement tools. Note that you can rotate and flip pattern pieces just like in real life. You can even use the zoom tools to bring you in for a close look. The placement tools even allow you to make a duplicate a pattern piece if needed.

Click and Drag is used to position the pattern pieces where you want on the fabric. A red outline tells you the piece you are moving around. Layout of the pattern pieces is super simple and VERY intuitive.

Screen Shot

Printing the pattern is done by giving the paper size and then the program tiles the pattern pieces across the measurements.

Screen Shot

Putting the tiled pattern pieces together is simplified by a small corner marking to help line up each tiled printout section.

Screen Shot
You can also printout a reference chart
with all the dimensions and pattern information.

All in all, if you are looking for a wearable art software pattern that is flexible and easy to use, then using one of the Click and Sew Patterns by Wild Ginger is for you.
