Who are Stewart Gill?

Stewart Gill paints were originally created in 1998 by husband & wife team Grant Stuart, a couture fashion & costume designer, & Rebecca Gill, a textile artist, in order to have the very best colouration products for their professional textile commissions.After creating the paints for themselves, demand flowed in from other interested textile artists, and paint production increased until there was no time left to produce garments! These days, they still make the paints to exactly the same recipes, lovingly hand-produced in Scotland in small batches. We know how much passion & commitment goes into creating fabulous art & textiles, and Stewart Gill cares enough about your creative endeavours to bring you the ultimate paints for performance, longevity, and versatility.

Why are Stewart Gill Paints so different?

SG paints are now well known and loved by professionals and beginners alike because:

a superbly soft surface handle means your fabrics stay soft, pliable & stitchable.
All SG paints are water based and child-safe, and heat-fix simply with a hot dry iron.
After fixing you can machine or hand-wash your painted fabrics, and dryclean & tumbledry too.
The colours are vibrant and pure, acid-free and archival as we use only the finest Italian pigments.
Our lustre pigments, metallics & glitter paints never tarnish and can withstand direct ironing, machine washing and regular wear & tear!
All the paint shades are intermixable between the different ranges
You can layer the colours directly onto your fabric, and heatfix all in one go - there's no need to fix each paint type separately! All SG's have a medium-thick viscosity so you can use them for any work that needs sharp edge-definition with no bleeding ie; stamping, stencilling, direct paint techniques, and screen printing etc.
And yet by diluting with water you can create fluid colour washes too - it's really up to you as these products put you in total control.
Perhaps most exciting is the many surfaces you can use your SG paints on - ALL FABRICS including both natural & synthetic blends, paper, card, shrink plastic, polymer clay, Tyvec R, foams & fusibles such as Vilene R, leather, buchram, bone, shell, plaster, paperclay
Use your SG paints on anything that's porous or any surface that gets heat applied to it.

Types of Paint Available

Metamica is a super shiny resilient metallic lustre opaque textile paint that stays shiny even through the washing and heating processes. Metamica comes in 20 shades, 10 of classic traditional metal shades and 10 heirloom vintage shades.
Pearlise is a gently gleaming pealescent semi-opaque paint in seashell tones. Once adhered to fabric, it is both hand and machine washable. Pearlise comes in 10 seashell shades.

Layering the Paints

The key to layering the paint is in knowing the opacity of each of the varieties as products which are more opaque have a more dominant appearance on your surface.

The general rule is to apply your paints according to their opaque levels, either from opaque to translucent or translucent to opaque. Take your paints and line them up in order starting with the translucent colors, then glazes, semi-opaque and finally opaque. When you work, start from one end and work towards the other. Chose to begin with opaque colors or the translucent colors but don't start in the middle.

Stewart Gill paints are designed to intermix within the ranges but can also be layered directly on the surface with one exception, Galactica. Galactica will dull if mixed with other paints so for the most brilliant finish, apply Galactica as the final layer.
