How does the Pattern Maker Viewer Work?

Review by Sharla Hicks © 2003

At first glance I thought Pattern Viewer was not much more than a simple interface to view the included clipart. Turns out I was dead wrong. I started looking closely at the menus I found the ability to:

  • Add multiple images to a design
  • Use the clipboard to cut, copy and paste
  • Move images around the design screen
  • Use multiple designs windows at the same time
  • Add text to design
  • Select a floss palette from 15 company and even create a custom palette

I was amazed. This was not a simple clipart disk, this was a small mini design program. All of a sudden I was viewing these disks as a great deal of bang for the buck at only $19.99 for each Volume!

3 Patterns with Text Added
This example uses 3 images from the Library
and adds Text (that I could center and select color for) using one of the 12 Cross Stitch fonts included in the Clipart Library

Let me give you a quick explanation on how I went about creating the 3 Angel Merry Christmas design.

Using the Clipart Library Search

First I opened the Library Dialogue Box using the Library Menu, I could have also used the Library icon icon.

Library Dialogue Box

In the Library dialogue box, I could select the objects/clipart that I wanted to view by using one of 4 ways to locate and view images in the dialogue box. After locating the clipart I wanted to view, I could use the scroll bar to see all the choices related to the theme I was interested in. View everything or narrow down the choice using the following options found in the dialogue box:

Locate images by using search options for:

      1. All
      2. By Theme
      3. By Object/Clipart name (object is a common graph reference to the images)
      4. Doing a Keyword Search

Edit using the Clipboard and ability to copy, cut, move, and rotate an object

exampleI then had the ability to select and copy my image to the clipboard and return to the design screen. Here a design box the size of the image appeared on the screen.

  • When I clicked on the design box, the clipart pasted itself into the box.
  • Once the image was pasted inside the box I could move it around the fabric/design screen. HINT: Design the top left corner last as this allows the new images being brought to the design not to overwrite the previous image.Edit Menu

I repeated this process 3 times. Each time using the ability to cut, move on the angels to tweak placement. I never did get around to trying out Flip and Rotate — just image what great borders I could create with those options. (see the Edit Menu to the right)

The only thing I could not do was resize the angels. Resize would require moving the image to the sister and more powerful program, Pattern Maker.

Determine fabric size and margins

When I was in the middle of placing my 3 angels I realized I did not have a large enough design screen. That is when I discovered the ability to select the size of the fabric you want to design on. Look at all the ways you have to manipulate the size of the cloth and automatically resizing the cloth to the image size with or without stitch margins.

Add Text, plus select Color and Size

Once I was satisfied with my 3 angels placement, I decided text was in order so I clicked on the Text Icon and the Text dialogue box opened. Again I was amazed to find 12 different cross-stitch fonts and the ability to size, color and center and tweak the text. I could even setup margins/position on the cloth by selecting the number of stitches I wanted from the edge.

Select Floss Palette from 15 Thread Companies

When I typed Merry Christmas the first time on the design in progress I was dissatisfied with the ability to do placement and select text color. That was when I put on my thinking cap and realized that I could open a NEW blank design screen at the same time. When I clicked on the new blank screen it prompted me to select a font color from the Palette Properties dialogue from the floss colors listed for 15 companies. The palette even included the ability to create your own custom palette. Again I was inspired by the depth of this little mini program.

Windows MenuAfter designing my red, centered Merry Christmas Text, I copied the text and moved it to the 3 angels design screen and recentered it under the design. Wow! The ability to use multiple windows for design with cut and paste between windows again shows the depth the Pattern Maker Viewer has!

I continued exploring the menus and found rich options built-in to make cross-stitch work simple.

View and print images 4 ways:View Menu

Pattern Maker Viewer has the ability to select solid, stitch or symbols for your design. When selecting symbols, it even has a hint of color to act as an extra guide. The ability to add or remove the grid opens up even doors.

Export Designs using the Clipboard

Pattern Maker Viewers saves only files called .pat. .Pat is a file type that can be only be used by the Viewer or its sister program, the more powerful Pattern Marker for Cross Stitch. Now what more could I ask for from a $19.99 program, not much once I realized that I could use the clipboard to cut, copy and paste any design to a program that allows pasting from the clipboard.

Paste images to the big and little guys like Word, CorelDraw, and Abode Illustrator and to the little guys like Paint, the program that is included with the standard Windows Accessories.

Creative uses of the Clipart images

Well needless to say in my mind, any limitation to Pattern Maker Viewer immediately evaporated as I realized it had the ability to use the clipboard to copy and paste selection. This allows me to select all or any part of the design that I then can move to other programs that I use. No limitation here, in fact this feature opens up even greater potential uses for the clipart included in the program. Now these clipart images can be used by:

  • Quilters: Use the Grid and color charts to determine the number of square you need for a design. Save the design as a bitmap and transfer into Electric Quilt as a block or into Quilt-Pro as fabric. Also consider using the Tracing Board option found in both Electric Quilt and Quilt Pro that allows you trace new design blocks. The ability to use the Clipart divided into Color filled Grids makes doing picture piecing simple.
  • Scrapbookers: Design motifs and borders for that have the special touch that no one else has
  • Newsletter editors: Add clipart to your jazz up those pages
  • Webmasters: find just that little touch you need to add spark to your websites

Okay you get the idea, if you can think up a way to use clipart, Pattern Viewer and the Volume 1 and 2 (see images below) will give you some wonderful designs to choose from. Have fun and share with me any unique projects you end up making. I always love sharing success stories.
