'Chipped Quilts, A National Quilt Identity System and Registry, helps you 'chip and register your quilts fast and easy. ‘Chipped refers to a microchip no larger than a grain of rice that is implanted in the quilt. When the microchip is scanned, it sends a signal consisting of a unique 10 digit number that can be registered to the quilt owner in our national database Registry. Together, the 'Chip and Registry are designed to help ensure that you and your quilt will stay together.

An Introduction to 'Chipped Quilts

'Chipped Quilts are made possible by microchip technology. Microchips are tiny, the size of a grain of rice! As such, they are easy to hide within the layers of your quilt. These tiny chips are encoded with a unique 10 digit number that can be read by a special reader. That number, when entered into The National Quilt Registry's database, provides positive identification of the quilt and links it to its rightful owner even if all other means of identification have been defaced or removed.

Single Chip Package contains:

  • 'Chipped Quilts Microchip
  • Contact Information Label to stitch to your quilt
  • 'Chip Number ID labels for your records
  • Facts about The National Quilt Registry

Why 'Chip?

‘Chipped Quilts’ primary goal is to make stolen, lost and missing quilts a rare occurrence. Positive identification is a huge step in the right direction. To further this goal we urge quilters to consider the benefits of our ‘Chipping and Registry program.

Because each quilt that is ‘Chipped has a unique identity number, it is provided with

  • Security against theft or loss. Chipping can help ensure your quilt’s return when recovered by law enforcement or a helpful citizen.
  • Permanent proof of ownership and provenance. Registration of your quilt is quick and easy and can be updated or transferred with a phone call or visit to this site. If you have an insurance rider covering your quilts, check with your agent to see if ‘Chipping can reduce your rate.

A positive, quick, no-touch way to identify quilts upon arrival and for returns at quilt shows and related events. 'Chipped Quilts' motto is “If your quilt is shipped, it should be ‘Chipped!”

How to 'Chip your quilt

It's easy to 'Chip a new, in-progress quilt or a finished quilt. The techniques are slightly different. Just remember to note exactly where you place the 'Chip. This will be important information to list when you enter the quilt into The National Quilt Registry.

It's easy to 'Chip a new, in-progress quilt or a finished quilt. The techniques are slightly different. Just remember to note exactly where you place the 'Chip. This will be important information to list when you enter the quilt into The National Quilt Registry. For a quilt in progress, the 'Chip can be placed just about anywhere except in the binding.

A finished quilt can be 'Chipped in two ways.

Detailed instructions are included in the package.

'Chip Injection System for Existing Quilts comes with 'chip pre-loaded in a syringe that can be inserted through the quilt fabric and into the batting anywhere in the quilt. The syringe is re-loadable with additional single 'chips when ‘Chipping several quilts.

If your quilt is of museum quality or is fragile due to age or fabric type, 'Chipped Quilts recommend that you consult a textile curator before choosing which method to use.
