Komen race, the Breast Cancer 3-Day walks and the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. They walk to raise money and awareness to find a cure. Why We Walk |

This book celebrate the spirit of the thousands of women-and increasing numbers of men- who every year crowd the streets of America's major cities to walk, talk, laugh, and cry their way toward finding a cure for breast cancer.
They are ordinary individuals, each with their own story and their own reasons to raise money, train, and then walksome 1 mile, some 40 or even 60 miles.
These women and men come together to give of themselves, endure the hardships, and share their hope for the future. Their stories are remarkable.
Deb Murphy participated in her first long-distance breast cancer walk in 1999 to show support for her godmother, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. That weekend proved to be one of the most extraordinary times ion her life, and even then she knew that Why We Walk would have to be a book. Deb Murphy is vice president of Lionheart Books, and before that she had a long career at Turner Broadcasting Systems, Inc. A graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo, she lives in Atlanta,Georgia, with her son, Nicholas.
Paula Lerner is a gifted photographer whose editorial roster includes Smithsominan, People, Time, Newsweek, and Business Week, plus a host of European and Asian magazines. Among her corporate and advertising clients are Agfa, Bright Horizons, Harvard, MIT, Children's Hospital Boston, the Commonwealth Fund, and the Business Council for Peace. Her personal work has been shown in venues throughout the Northeast and has been part of national traveling exhibits. Several months after beginning work on this book, Paula herself was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, she has completed treatment; she is now doing well and has a good prognosis. Paula lives near Boston with her husband and two daughters.
