About the Author

Jane Nicholas discovered stumpwork in 1982 and since then has been engrossed in researching, doing and teaching this form of embroidery. Her work has appeared in Textile Fibre Forum, Australian Country Craft and Decorating, Country Craft Collection Needlecraft, and Popular Needlecraft. Drawing on her background as a secondary school teacher, she has taught stumpwork throughout Australia for the last three years, and she has been invited to teach for the Embroiderers' Guild of America at their National Seminar in San Francisco in 1996. Jane also runs a fabrics and haberdashery business, Chelsea Fabrics, in Bowral, NSW, and is a avid collector of old textiles, embroideries, buttons and needlework tools. She is married and has three children.

Embroidery ExampleBack Cover Information

Stumpwork is a style of raised and padded embroidery that has its origins in the seventeenth century. It incorporates a charming array of motifs— exotic flowers and fruits, insects and animals— all worked as delicate sculptural forms.

Stumpwork Embroidery explains how to work this style in a clear and comprehensive manner, discussing all the traditional techniques such as surface stitchery, padded appliqué, needlelace, and wired, detached embroidered shapes. It provides full instructions and step-by-step illustrations, along with fascinating historical tidbits, for working over forty flowers, fruits and insects. The projects showcase the author's style, which, while distinctively her own, remains true to the spirit of seventeenth-century stumpwork.

Nerylla Tuanton's forward and the further reading list complete the package, which will prove an invaluable reference book and one to be treasured for many years to come.
