Over the past decade, the study of African African quilts has expanded greatly, and the growing interest and scholarship are reflected in this new edition of Signs & Symbols. Important new quilts that have come to my attention have been added. Many recent exhibitions have allowed this unique art form to reach a growing audience; the largest exhibit-fifty quilts-was mounted by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1994. This expanded edition brings to a new light the rich cultural and artistic heritage of African American quilts.
