An
Excerpt from the BookRepeated block quilts are familiar territory for most quilters. Shifting Perspectives presents a different way to use repeated blocks. You make a set of oversized blocks and then trim them so that smaller blocks are cut from the originals, but with each cut, the blocks are trimmed in a different place. Sew them together to produce a unique shifted-image quilt that takes the repeated block quilt on a whole new adventure. Even better, you won't waste the trimmed-off parts - use them for a border that balances and unifies the quilt!
The idea for this kind of quilt was sparked by the use of the Fresnel lens, also known as the Fly's Eye lens or the Multi-View lens. The lens multiplies the image seen through it into many small blocks, each of which is shifted slightly. Shifting Perspectives will guide you through all the steps to make a dynamic Multi-View quilt, using a block pattern from the book or using a block of your own design. You will also find many variations on this approach, including the use of other traditional blocks, rectangular blocks, and square blocks made into a rectangular quilt.
Instructions for four quilts are included to get you started and guide you through the concepts presented here. Each uses different cutting techniques so you can try them all out. Pick your own level: Easiest, Easy, Intermediate, or Advanced. Or strike out on your own and design an original Multi-View Image quilt yourself, beginning with the chapter, Design Your Block. Design guidance in that chapter will help you in auditioning fabric choices while considering value, scale, and color - all are important ingredients in achieving balanced, unified quilts. As always there are many right ways
to do everything! You may find shortcuts or better approaches, or simply use these
ideas as a springboard to your own technique. About the AuthorLorraine lives in Seattle, Washington, with her husband and near her two grown children and her grandsons. After earning a BFA and an MFA in sculpture, she stumbled into quilting and has enjoyed teaching (and constantly learning more about) this fabulous art form since 1972. Her first book, Design Essentials: The Quilters Guide, was published in 1998. She has two lines of wearable art patterns and can't seem to decide which she likes making more, quilts or garments - so she keeps doing them both!
