Scraps to You, TooAuthor: Debbie Caffrey |

The real title of this book is, It May Look Like Scraps to You, But in Fact, These Triangular Units Are Strip Pieced, Too! The book expands upon a technique that was introduced in my Scraps to You! pattern, released in 1996.
It all started when I was having trouble getting to sleep one hot Alaskan summer night. I began thinking about a new tool I had purchased at the quilt shop. The Onmigrid 96 was designed to cut half-square triangles from a strip of fabric. I wondered, Since a strip is a rectangle, can I cut triangles from pieced rectangles? Normally, I would get up, go to the sewing room, and begin to test my theory. It so happened that my daughter Erin had already claimed my sewing area in the cool basement as her sleeping spot for the night.
After spending the rest of the night wide awake and mentally designing all of the quislts I could make, I finally got to the sewing room. Within ten minutes I proved that my piecing technique worked as qulckly and precisely as I had imagined! Traditional Bird in the Air blocks were flying from my sewing machine in record time with no waste and fantastic precision.
I began teaching workshops based upon this method to make sure that others thought it was as valuable a I did. Five years and many, many workshops later, I haven't met anyone who would rather piece the Bird in the Air blocks the old fashioned way. Try just one set of sixteen blocks, and I think you'll understand my excitement about "Scraps".
Debbie Caffrey lived in Anchorage, Alaska, with her husband Dan for twenty-one years. There she and Dan raised their children Monica, Erin, and Mark. In the fall of 2000 Debbie and Dan will return to the Middle Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico where they will live near the small town on La Joya.
In addition to her books, Debbie publishes a line of patterns, including numerous mystery quilt patterns. Designing and writing are very rewarding, but teaching workshops both locally and nationwide is her favorite part of the job.
