Cover InformationDiscover textile artist Jane Dunnewold's secrets to creating visual complexity and depth in fabric. In this comprehensive guide, Jane explains her system of layering simple processes to produce intriguing, one-of-a-kind surface designs. Full-color photographs of fabric, quilts, and clothing provide a sampling of her beautiful results.
Experiment with fiber-reactive dyes, household bleach, fabric paints, water-based resists, photocopy transfers, foils, and glitters to create your own sumptuous fabrics. Add even more texture with silk screening, stenciling, stamping, embroidery, and beading. Complex Cloth is a one-of-a-kind resource for a variety of surface design techniques.
"The world is a miraculous place, and ideas for surface designs are everywhere," Jane writes. "You may make wondrous cloth based on what you learn in this book, but if your eyes are newly opened to the world around you, we will both have succeeded beyond these limited pages."
About
the AuthorJane Dunnewold grew up in the central Ohio, an area rich in the traditions of sewing and quiltmaking. She earned a degree in psychology and religion, then spent several years gathering "real-life" experience as a waitress, kindergarten teacher, apartment complex manager, and restaurant co-owner before becoming a full-time textile artist.
Jane has produced more than 300 lengths of complex cloth, no two alike. Her work has been included in many juried and invitational exhibitions, including Quilt National '93 and '95 and Visions: Layers of Excellence '93 and '96. She has maintained a studio in San Antonio, Texas, since 1978.
Jane currently chairs and teaches in the Surface Design Studio at the Southwest Craft Center in San Antonio. She shares her home studio with trumpet player John Carroll and daughter Zenna.
