Back Cover Information

Colour on Cloth helps you unleash the power of dye on fabric. As the stunning photography of finished fabrics in this book show, gloriously colorful effects that can be created on fabric using simple cold-water dyes.

The range of techniques include direct dyeing, layered dyeing, painting with dye, pattern dyeing, and folding techniques, using resists such as flour or potato dextrin and devore, in which fabric is 'burnt out' to create a textured effect. Many different fabrics are used, such as cotton, silk, satin, linen, and cotton velvet, as well as threads and stitching.

Easy-to-follow dye 'recipes' allow you to mix up the jewel-like colors used throughout the book, and guidance is given on the technical aspects of color and dyeing including safety considerations.

It will appeal to all those involved in textiles, such as embroiderers, quilters and textile artists, as well as students and teachers of design. Most importantly, the author urges you to develop your own creativity and learn to experiment with color.

  • Explores the creative possibilities of applying dye to fabric
  • Packed with dye 'recipes' and handy technical information
  • Illustrated with glorious color photographs of finished pieces

About the Author: Ruth Issett lives in Kent with her family, where she juggles teaching textiles and design courses both nationally and internationally with working on her own color-related projects , in papers, fibers and cloth, and writing the occasional book. She regularly demonstrates textile and paper techniques for Art Van Go at large textile shows and exhibitions. She is the author of two previous Batsford books, Colour on Paper and Fabric and Glorious Papers.
