A stunning collector's edition of the best art quilts. Considered the "premier innovative showcase for contemporary quilts" by the Wall Street Journal, Quilt National recognizes works made using a variety of materials and surface design techniques. Hundreds of quilts chosen for display at the biennial exhibition over the year spanning 1995 to 2003 are presented in stunning color accompanied by the artists' remarks about their work and source of inspiration.
Through hundreds of large, spectacular color photographs, Art Quilts: A Celebration brings together almost a decade of nontraditional works chosen to appear in the Quilt National biennial exhibition. This juried show, held at the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio, honors the best and most exciting contemporary quilts intended for wall display rather than as bed covers. From landscapes to complex conceptual pieces, these works offer a broad overview of the changes, trends, and accomplishments achieved by some of the most creative artists worldwide. Acclaimed author and widely recognized American folk art expert Robert Shaw writes of these innovators, "Whether they tell stories, paint pictures, or combine color and pattern, the best of their quilts can capture our imaginations and touch our feelings in the same way all good art does."
Shaw contributes both an introduction that traces the history of quilting, and a special section on collecting, displaying, and storing art quilts. This is followed by a gallery of the exhibition collection, including the artists' descriptions of the motivations behind their pieces.
"Using a whole-cloth, dye-painting technique," explains Barbara Otto, "blurs the distinction between painting and quilting, and encourages people to wonder about how we define art." Yvonne Forman juxtaposes a "high-tech laser-printed photo transfer with the traditional nine-patch block, dissolving boundaries and reordering fragments in pursuit of what can happen when two unlikely elements meet." On her quilt, Laura Conners " created patterns and marks by exposing fabric to rusted metal surfaces before using overprinting, dyeing, and discharging techniques to build up rich surfaces."
These pages are filled with experimentation and excitement as the artists share their works with you.
