Make a self-portrait? Me? Scrutinize myself in the mirror? Face all of my flaws and then try to re-create them in paint, or collage, or fabric? Relax. Nearly every artist who was invited to contribute to this book had the same reaction. Then after accepting enthusiastically and saying what a great idea they thought it was, they asked, "Does the self-portrait have to be of me?"

Well yes. That would be implicit in the term self-portrait.

As you will see, all of the artists who participated faced the mirror—or looked deep within—and reflected back amazing works of art in a variety of media.

Working in mixed media will free you to express yourself in unusual, unrepresentational ways.
