Color by Design from Ann Johnston is a practical guide to exploring color and design directly on fabric. It allows dyers to focus more on color and design than on chemistry. Exercises in this book progress from simple to complex and include a wide variety of options for more experienced dyers. Relevant technical details are included for advanced dyers as well.

About the AuthorFirst, Ann learned to sew, then she learned to dye fabric. In between, she earned a BA in Literature from Stanford University and an MA in Geography from the University of Oregon, married Jim, worked in Peace Corps Peru, and taught school in the US. By now, Ann has been putting dye on fabric for over 25 years. Her years of experimentation have led to mountains of hand-dyed fabric and hundreds of one-of-a-kind quilts. Since she wrote Dye Painting!, Ann has continued to explore even more variations that work best with dyes. Color by Accident: Low-Water Immersion Dyeing, describes a quick and easy method to create richly textured fabrics. The popularity of that book pushed her to write its companion book, Color by Design: Paint and Print with Dye, a very complete manual of techniques for surface design with the same dyes. In her book, The Quilter's Book of Design, you can see some of Ann's quilts, made exclusively with her hand-dyed fabrics. If Ann isn't at home in Oregon dyeing fabric or making quilts, you may run into her in a workshop in the US or Europe, doing the same thing, or even more likely, somewhere on the road or trail with Jim and one or both of their sons, Scott and Todd
