The Handbook of Indigo Dyeing |
Back Cover InformationThe art of indigo dyeing dates back thousands of years: examples were found in the tombs of the ancient Egyptians, and there are references to is use in the Bible. Vivien Prideaux's passion for this craft began one 'wonderful day' many years ago when she discovered: 'just the most exciting dyeing process with terrific results, that has continues to excite my imagination ever since.' Here she shares her expertise as a dyer and her mastery of shibori fabric resist techniques, showing how a huge variety of wonderful effects can be produced by folding, stitching, binding and clamping fabric before dyeing. Clear instructions and step-by-step pictures demonstrate the dyeing process and show how to prepare, dye and make a silk velvet scarf, a tea cozy, a jacket and a cushion. From the AuthorAs a compulsive colorist and dyer brought up to use man-made dyes, I really did not take to using natural dyes. Mordanting fibers, pans of boiling colors, thermometers....the process seemed such a rigmarole and often achieved only pale colors compared with the quick and easy dyeing method used to produce the amazing colors of fiber-reactive dyes. This book comes out of my passion and respect for the patterns and effects that are obtainable through the combination of resist techniques, stitching and the indigo vat. The sample shibori techniques demonstrated should form the building blocks with which you can create patterns and texture on natural fibers. Vivien specializes in decorative and domestic textiles, made from natural fabrics and threads and dyes with fiber reactive, indigo and cochineal dyes. Her work has been exhibited all over the British Isles and in Japan and New Zealand.
