Back Cover Information

Learning how to hand dye fabrics is a natural progression for quilters as a way of further personalizing their work. Even beginners can mix one-of-a-kind colors, for example, or create unique patterns by folding, bunching and tying fabric during the dying process.

With Marquetta Bell-Johnson's special technique, you will use environmentally-friendly diluted air brush fabric paint as an alternative to caustic powdered dye. What's more, you won't need to repeatedly rinse the paint from textiles as you would with traditional dyes.

Bell-Johnson shows you how to dye distinctive fabrics using her method, piece a great quilt top, make a beautiful little quilt and add artistic embellishments like beads. She then gives you twenty spectacular patchwork and appliqué projects that make wonderful gifts and keepsakes, including Nine Patch Potholders, a Sky & Meadow Floor Pillow and a Shadow Block Quilt.

Author Marquetta Bell-Johnson About the Author

Marquetta Bell Johnson was born into a family of tailors and quilters where a working knowledge of basic sewing was expected. She learned to quilt by watching and helping her grandmother, Hattie Battle Miles, as she quilted covers for cold winter nights. As Marquetta matured, her quick wit and curious nature led her down many creative paths that eventually led her back to the family legacy of quilting. Fortunately, the skills she learned on that journey gave her an extensive understanding of color, design, and pattern. A self-taught artist with boundless creativity and imagination, she has benefited by the lessons she learned from other surface design artists and quilters.

Marquetta lives and works in Decatur, Georgia as a teaching artist, producing dyed fabrics, quilts and collectibles. She considers herself a community-minded artist using her creativity to impact the world in a positive way. Marquetta sees every stitch she makes as an act of love with the potential to foster harmony, well-being and peace.
