Introduction from the Author

I love designs that play with the eye and that is what first drew me to traditional Mariner's Compass blocks. The three-dimensional effect of what look like layers of points is wonderful.

In the last few years, fabrics with symmetrical designs have become increasingly available, making it easy to find just the right designs for fussy-cutting. Each Compass that I make is in some ways a surprise to me. Even though I now have a god idea of what fabrics will work well when fussy-cut, I still enjoy seeing the complete design for the first time after sewing the final seam and opening the center.

A large fussy-cut Compass can make a perfect center for a medallion quilt. Just one fussy-cut Compass can make a very nice small quilted wallhanging, or it can be mounted or matted to make a lovely piece of framed art.

  • Start with one of three block sizes—12", 18" or 30"—or follow the clear instructions to draft your own.
  • Step-by-step assembly photos clearly illustrate the sewing process.
  • Frame singly, use on pillows, or combine several to make a wallhanging or quilt top.

Ann Lainhart About the Author

I consider myself a contemporary traditionalist when it comes to quilting. By this I mean that much of my work is based on traditional quilt blocks such as Card Trick, Mariner's Compass and Eight-Pointed Star. But by using hand-dyed fabrics, border prints and fussy-cutting, my quilts have a somewhat contemporary feel.

I have been quilting for more than 30 years and teaching for more than 25 years. While living in Boston, I was a member of the Proper Bostonian Quilters.

My quilts have been displayed in the Vermont Quilt Festival; the New England Images shows; and the East Coast Quilters Alliance - "A Quilter's Gathering".

I enjoy working with people to make commissioned wallhangings that fit their space and color scheme. I also present slide shows, trunk shows and workshops to quilt guilds and other groups.
