Masters Art Quilts
|
IntroductionMasters Art Quilts' underlying concept is to display up to a dozen quilts by each of the artists and allow the artists' work to be seen in much greater depth. The result is an incredibly rich visual feast which provides an opportunity to learn more about each artist than would be possible in a survey of only one or two works per quilter. In viewing the quilts and reading the artists' ruminations about their work, you will gain an understanding of the pathways the quilters have taken, the themes they explore and the questions they return to time and again. The artists have diverse aspirations, approaches and techniques, so you will find enormous variation - and beauty in many guises - in these quilts.
About the Author and CuratorMartha Seilman has worked as an art quilter, art-quilt teacher, curator, author and administrator. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and Central America and is in several corporate and private collections. Her pieces have been featured in American Craft and on the cover of Art Calendar. As an art-quilt educator, Sielman has taught in preschool, elementary and middle schools as a Master Teaching Artist with support from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. Sielman has appeared on the HGTV show Simply Quilts, as well as on the local TV show Artists and Authors. In 2002, she founded Fiber Revolution, a group of art quilters who work together to educate the public about art quilts and to find exhibition opportunities. In May 2004, Sielman became Executive Director of Studio Art Quilt Associates, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing art quilting as a fine-art medium. As Executive Director, Sielman has witnessed the explosive growth of art quilting, as well as growing interest in art quilts as a legitimate and collectible fine-art medium. Sielman lives in Storrs, Connecticut, with her husband, their five children and two cats.
