Introduction

When we were thinking of locations for our next book we wanted a place with bags of colour and atmosphere, that was south of wintry England. A great friend of mine had bought and restored a 16th century tower with a walled garden on the Mediterranean island of Malta. It turned out to be the ideal choice.

The walled garden was a haven which supplied us with settings for several of our shots. The orange trees. Bougainvillea and cacti combined with warm Maltese stone brought out the richness of the quilts. Then we found old farmhouses, boats and wonderfully painted houses to add to the atmosphere.

Our aim was to echo or contrast with each quilt's colours to magnify the multi tones of them. I hope you agree that the old, distressed paint surfaces we discovered and the rich, weathered stone served as handsome settings for our book.

About the Author

Born in San Francisco, Kaffe settled in England in 1964 and worked as an artist. On a trip to Scotland, he stumbled upon an irresistible collection of colored yarns. A few months later, he was hooked and proceeded to knit and stitch himself a career. In 1996 Kaffe was asked by the charity Oxfam to visit villages in India to advise on designs that could be marketed in the West. A wonderful range of striped fabric was the result. After a meeting with his close friend and quilter, Liza Prior Lucy, in 1996, Kaffe was urged to do a book on her great passion, patchwork. This was the beginning of new adventure and many quilting collections followed, including Passionate Patchwork and Kaffe Fassett's Museum Quilts, which were both written with Liza. While working on his first quilting book, Kaffe designed a range of woven shot cotton and checked fabrics. There were quickly followed by a stunning collection of printed fabrics for the Kaffe Fassett Fabric Collection, all of which are featured in the Rowan Patchwork books.
