From the EditorWhile preservation of the past is one of a museum's primary functions, its greatest service is performed as it links the past to the present and to the future. With that intention, the Museum of the American Quilter's Society sponsors an annual contest and exhibit called New Quilts from an Old Favorite. Created to acknowledge our quiltmaking heritage and to recognize innovation, creativity and excellence, the contest challenges today's quiltmakers to interpret a single traditional quilt block in a work of their own design. Each year contestants respond with a myriad of stunning interpretations. Sawtooth: New Quilts from an Old Favorite is a wonderful representation of these interpretations. You will find a brief description of the 2008 contest, followed by a presentation of the five award winners and the 13 finalists and their quilts. Full-color photographs of the quilts accompany each quiltmaker's comments - comments that provide insight into their widely diverse creative processes. Full-size patterns for the traditional Sawtooth block are included to form the basis for your own rendition. Tips, techniques, and patterns contributed by the contestants offer an artistic framework for your own work. Our wish is that Sawtooth: New Quilts from an Old Favorite will further our quiltmaking heritage as new quilts based on the Sawtooth block are inspired by the outstanding quilts, patterns, and instructions in this book.
