Back Cover Information

"Journal Quilts are quilts that tell stories and quilts that break boundaries. They are small, elegant windows into their makers' hearts and lives. At the same time, they are exciting doors flung open wide to a world of growth and experimentation. They personify the quilt artist's search for creativity and self-expression." Karey Patterson Bresenhan, Editor

So begins the introduction to Creative Quilting: The Journal Quilt Project, a compendium of more than 400 quilts, each at a size of 8 1/2" x 11", culled from the nearly 6,000 Quilt Pages made by 918 artists who have participated in The Journal Quilt Project over five years. The Project—A Page From My Book, displayed each year at International Quilt Festival in Houston and Chicago—was started in 2002 by Festival Director Karey Patterson Bresenhan, organizer and curator of the annual exhibit.

Each quilt shown here represents a page in a quilter's life story, chronicling joy, frustration, tragedy, inspiration, mundane moments, artistic epiphany—and every event and emotion in between.

In Creative Quilting: The Journal Book Project, you'll find:

  • Glossy, color photographs of more than 400 creative journal quilts, created by nearly 250 quilters from around the world.
  • Inspiration and ideas for choosing themes and subjects for your quilts.
  • Descriptions of each quilt, including techniques and materials.
  • Stories from the artist, filled with hope and laughter, poignancy and pain, trepidation and exultation.
  • Organized chapters: Series; Stories; Flowers, Plants & Trees; Animals & Insects; Landscapes & Special Places; Faces & Figures; and Abstracts; as well as an Artist Index and Bibliography.

Creative Quilting: The Journal Quilt Project is not only a beautiful book to look at and read, but a valuable resource for artists seeking innovation and inspiration in their art and their lives.
