Back Cover Information

Many of the designs in these floor tiles are identical to traditional blocks and patterns that we see in countless quilts. It is fascinating that these patterns, created well over 600 years ago, have traveled across continents and have been reproduced in fabric by generations of quilters.

Most of the individual quilts are constructed either in block format or in strips, making it quite easy to add another row (or more) for a bed-size quilt or to make fewer rows for a crib or lap quilt.

  • Re-create the grandeur of Venice in 10 splendid quilts inspired by marble floor tiles.
  • Learn to give your quilts the look of real marble with batiks and hand-dyed fabrics, or choose brighter colors for a bold, contemporary look.
  • Speedy new strip-piecing methods make these quilts surprisingly easy to piece - try Christine's technique for sewing Tumbling Blocks with no Y-seams!

Christine Porter About the Author

Christine Porter lives in Bristol, England with her husband, Neil. She was taught to sew as a child by her grandmother and mother, but it was not until 1989 that—on a sudden impulse—she visited the American Museum in Bath and discovered a wonderful collection of vintage American quilts. The quilts moved her so much that she gave up her career as a college lecturer in health studies to become a quilter full time.

Christine has been able to combine her twin loves of historic architecture and quilting by exploring designs that occur in both ancient floor tiles and traditional quilt blocks. Her first book, Quilt Designs from Decorative Floor Tiles, was published in 2003, followed by Tessellation Quilts in 2006. Both translate interesting traditional patterns into quilts.

Her quilts have won awards in Britain and the United States, and she has been a fabric consultant to the Woodrow Studios.

She and her husband, Neil, a photographer, love to travel and they enjoy working together, developing their creativity in quilts, photographs and words. Most of all, they love their three children and five grandchildren - and their dog
