Introduction

This book had its beginning in a workshop called "Scrapaholics Heaven" devised by Judy. Color and fabric are Judy's preoccupation, so the workshop she created centered on color and fabric, as well as on designs created from half-square triangles. Her concept was simple - two colors applied to a four-patch block made up entirely of half-square triangles.

Margaret attended one of Judy's workshops and was immediately entranced with the possibilities of color and design from this seemingly simple starting point. Believing Judy had something new to add to the literature on scrap quilts, Margaret persuaded Judy that a book was more than just a good idea and should become a reality.

This book works on many levels. It will give you a simple way to design and make scrap quilts. The sewing skills involved are all very easy and the quilts are finished with straightforward quilting, which can be done either by machine or by hand.

About the Authors

Judy Hooworth is a leading Australian quiltmaker. Originally trained in art and illustration through studies at the National Art School in Sydney, Judy first became an art teacher. In the 1970s she saw quilts in glossy American magazines and began making quilts herself. Other women in the North Sydney area were also interested in quilts, and they began meeting weekly. Throughout all this, she was always interested in contemporary quilts and made her own original work. Judy has exhibited in the annual exhibitions of contemporary quilts held at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum. Judy has taught quiltmaking throughout Australia, in New Zealand and Germany and continues to make her own art quilts.

Margaret Rolfe is a well-known Australian quiltmaker, author and quilt historian. She was inspired to take up quiltmaking because of quilts she saw in America in 1975, the year before the American Bicentennial .In the early 1980s, Margaret created pieced and applique designs for Australian flowers, animals and birds, and these were published in Australian Patchwork in 1985. Margaret has continued to make quilts and write books about quiltmaking, with special focus on designing pieced animal and bird blocks. Some of her recent books are Go Wild with Quilts and Go Wild with Quilts - Again, which give patchwork designs for North American wildlife and A Quilter's Ark, a selection of animal designs for foundation piecing.
