IntroductionSashiko, or Japanese traditonal stitchery, has been admired for its beautiful geometric patterns of stitched lines. Although sashiko is regarded as a decorative embroidery, its origin is quite practical. Cloth in early times was so scarce for poor farmers, fishermen and other ordinary workers that they would cherish and reuse their worn-out garments by stitching heavily for reinforcement or by quilting them for warmth. From a practical beginning as wise, loving care for precious necessities of life, sashiko eventually developed, resulting in artistic patterns that symbolize everyday items such as hemp leaf, mist or ocean wave patterns. More and more patterns have been created and sophisticated over the centuries until we rediscover them as a design source for simple modern life, at the same time feeling the warmth of old handiwork. If you are a beginner, do not let the detailed instructions scare you off; just keep stitching with the needle for a while. You will soon realize the fun of sashiko needlework. If you are an experienced crafter, challenge yourself to new, inspirational patterns in this book.
