Introduction

Sashiko is a simple running stitch worked in repeating or interlocking patterns through one or more layers of fabric. Typically, the patterns are executed in white cotton thread on indigo-dyed fabric. The traditional patterns readily lend themselves to modern decorative applications, such as purely decorative embroidery, but the stitching was originally designed for quilting together several layers of fabric for warmth and durability or for strengthening a single layer of fabric.
