Introduction

The hope is that many people will share in the excitement of Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota. The 55 works of art in this publication possess a compelling beauty, and their creator, Itchiku Kubota, was a remarkably talented and innovative force in Japan and an international acclaimed kimono artist. The opportunity to present these remarkable pieces to American audiences is worthy of celebration in its own right. The directors of the exhibition venues - The San Diego Museum of Art, the Tinken Museum of Art and the Canton Museum of Art - are delighted with this special collaboration, and enduring manifestation of which is this handsome book.

About the Authors

Dale Carolyn Gluckman, guest curator of the traveling exhibition Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota, is also the co-author of When Art Became Fashion: Kosode in Edo-Period Japan, and a former curator and department head at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She is currently an independent curator and consultant specializing in Asian costumes and textiles.

Hollis Goodall is curator of Japanese art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She is the lead author of The Raymond and Frances Bushell Collection of Netsuke.
