About the Author

When Polly Minick began hooking rugs in the late 1970's, she wanted to hook two rugs for their home and quit—no need for lessons or anything like that, just teach herself to hook, get the rugs she wanted, and that would be the end of it! Who would have thought that trying to make those two rugs would lead to this? What she found was that making those two rugs to look like what she had in her mind was going to take a good amount of time. And during the time trying to get those two rugs the way she wanted them to be—she found that she was "hooked".

Polly and her husband of 40 plus years, Tom, have three grown sons, three daughters-in-law, and seven fabulous grandchildren. Polly, Tom and their new Airedale, Annie, are living in Naples, Florida, and enjoying the new location.

Since she started making rugs, Polly and her work have garnered praise from all, thanks to articles in Country Home, Better Homes and Gardens, Coastal Living, Colonial Homes, Early American Life, Victoria, Creative Home, Architectural Digest and American Patchwork and Quilting. The New York Times, Houston Chronicle and Georgetowner have also written of Polly's achievements

Like many primitive rug hookers, Polly draws inspiration from her love of family, home, country and nature. Her imagery includes stars, hearts, horses, houses, flags and birds. Her patriotic works were inspired when her youngest son, Jim, was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, he is currently a lieutenant colonel, recently back to Iraq.

The ambiguity of Polly's motifs and patterns is understandable given her aim to stick to her goal of making her rugs primitive and naive. She describes her drawings as "childlike," placing strong emphasis on her respect and appreciation for early-American creations.

Polly's enthusiasm for the art has led her to national acclaim as a creator of primitive-style rugs and a highly touted guest lecturer. She enjoys traveling the country and meeting with others who also love fiber art. She is proud of seeing the increased interest in this fiber art over the years and she feels a responsibility for its continued growth.
