Take a traditional craft and give it new "punch"! About the AuthorAmy Bell Buehler grew up in North Carolina, with a move to the mountains of Virginia while still a teenager. She and her husband married after they both graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and settled in New Jersey. When her boys were toddlers, Amy discovered quilting and all other hobbies fell by the wayside. As a stay-at-home mother, she spent her free time learning new techniques and finding new places to hide her growing stash of fabric. Traditional patterns and reproductions of antique quilts were her focus for many years. Several years ago her daughter, Mae, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a progressive degeneration of the retina resulting in gradual vision loss, and Amy began using modern fabrics, with bright colors and patterns in her quilts. "Mae's Cats," featuring whimsical appliqued cats based on drawings made by Mae, won a blue ribbon in the 2005 New Jersey Guild Quilt Show and was juried into the 2006 AQS Show in Paducah, Kentucky. It was also featured in the August 2006 issue of Quilter's Home magazine. Amy has recently designed several quilts for Pickle Road Studios. Although Amy picked up a punchneedle on a whim, her interest in it quickly grew and now nearly every table surface in her home overflows with threads, yarns, and sketches. Two or three hoops hold projects in progress. The family has gotten used to the gentle sound of punching every evening. Besides quilting and punchneedle, Amy also buys and sells Singer featherweight sewing machines when the opportunity strikes. She occasionally teaches a class at her local quilt shop on maintaining these machines.
