Introduction

More than 500 images explore the free-form embroidered creations of the people of the Gujarat Province. Dating back 30 to 100 years, they include original garments, temple offerings, welcome banners and second-generation quilted works that combine precious remnants for new decorative uses. These items have trickled onto the world market where they are treasured by decorators and collectors. Textile artists, designer, and ethnologists alike will delight in these examples of the boundless imaginations of itinerant tribal women who make much of little in their elaborate, mica and bead-studded creations.

About the Author

Tina Skinner has authored numerous books on textiles and design. She collects embroidery, textiles and instruments of textile production and dabbles in the arts herself. Her travels have been largely confined to eastern Asia, though her favorite pieces tend to originate from more primitive traditions in central Asia and Africa. Likewise, she has found an extraordinary collection in the personal mementos of Sam Hilu, whom she counts among her most important mentors. Hilu has traveled the world seeking out indigenous arts, and has an incredible personal collection. In this business, he ministers to artists and artful persons in the West while finding ways to preserve textile production techniques through quality garments and dry goods. His designs are sold through boutiques and museum shops nationwide.
