Introduction
Giving these thoughtful expressions for holidays and
special occasions is almost as much fun as making them! But don't
wait for a particular event to create the little fabric collages
- trade them as artist trading cards or put them on display to admire
as the artworks they are. Basic sewing skills and an assortment
of fabrics and threads are all you need to create each card, while
the handmade envelopes are easy to fashion from fabric also. Feel
free to embellish your cards with charms, beads, buttons, sequins
or any other decorations that catch your eye.
Meet the Designer
When asked how she finds inspiration for her fabric card designs,
Kendra Maclean laughs. "I don't know why it happens
this way," she says, "but new design ideas usually come
to me when I am in the shower." To get the creative process
under way, Kendra begins sketching. She works on paper until she
feels the design is ready for fabric.
Kendra explains, "I was an art major in college, but I didn't
get my designing business started until my daughter left home and
I became an empty nester. When my grandchildren came along, I designed
a few doll patterns. These days, I spend most of my time working
on fabric cards."
The Arizona resident once owned a quilt shop in Las Vegas. "Running
a shop is a lot of work. I never had time to do any sewing. I even
had to contract with other quilters to have samples made for the
store. So in 1994, I was ready for a change. I sold my share of
the store to my business partner and started making patterns. I
had to work fast to get my first six patterns ready for market.
At the show, I had this huge blank wall for my stuff and only those
six designs on it. But it was exciting to see people buying my work."
