From the Author

I offer a basic reference and patterns for lettering to be used in quiltmaking. While searching through antique quilts, I found many nineteenth century quilts had the alphabet on them possibly used by mothers while crossing the prairie by wagon train to teach their children.

I have made quilts featuring four different alphabets.

• The block alphabet can be used as just plain letters or as a child's quilt with an animal for each of the letters.
• The cursive alphabet has both upper and lower case letters.
• The floral alphabet features large letters with a flower for each letter.
• Finally, there is the Spencerian alphabet, which is also know as Roundhand. This classy script was developed Platt Rogers Spencer in the nineteenth century. Our modern script is developed from it.

Bea has been a quiltmaker, teacher and lecturer since 1990. Because of her love of nature, flowers and art, she has found a never ending source of ideas for appliqué, her favorite medium. As a result, most of her work is in appliqué

Bea teaches and lectures in the Kansas City area and belongs to several local quilt guilds. She lives in Overland Park, Kansas with her husband, Red. She wrote her first book in 1999 and has completed a book every year since..
