Introduction

Anyone who has been a quilter longer than a week probably has a fabric stash. You may not have thought about this, but you have a wealth of selvages!

Why would anyone want to make a selvage quilt .........because it's fun and you can enjoy your whole stash and not use any of it up! If you don't like your creation, who cares? You were just going to throw the selvages away, anyway.

Reasons for trying selvage quilts

  • They are creative - one-of-a-kind
  • They are beautiful, have a busy appearance & make dazzling throws
  • They are fun to read
  • They are sturdy making great utility quilts

Author Karen Griska About the Author

Karen Griska is a passionate and prolific quilt artist who made her first quilt at age 13, a charming one-patch. A self-taught quilter, she has now made over 200 quilts, all original designs. Karen is inspired by antique quilts, particularly those pictured in the state quilt survey books, which she studies avidly. Her favorites are dynamic interpretations of traditional quilts. She loves quilts with quirky, improvisational elements of surprise in their design.

Her favorite part of the quiltmaking process is creating the design. Karen does not usually sketch a plan in advance, but prefers to develop the design as she works. The thrill of discovery fuels her passion for quilting. She would rather quilt than eat!

Karen enjoys encouraging other quilters to have more fun with their quilting. She challenges them to ignore precision in piecing and coordinating fabrics in favor of working in a more carefree style. She created the Oregon Trail Quilt Challenge, in which quilters make a small quilt using only a given bundle of fabrics and no pattern. They could use only the materials you had on hand and the ideas in your head.

Karen and her husband currently reside in White Plains, New York.
