About the Author

For designer, Pat Sloan, quilting has 'shaped up' into an occupation she never would have dreamed of pursuing.

Although Pat grew up sewing and crafting, she didn't dive into the world of quilter until 1992. "At first I thought it would be boring," Pat admit, "but a friend signed me up and I haven't looked back."

Since then, quilting has become Pat's favorite activity, in part because she enjoys working with her hands. "I like that motion, the action of creating something, especially with fabric," she says.

The enthusiasm for quilting led Pat, a former computer programmer who worked in human resources, to quit her job in the 1990s. "I just had to find a way to quilt full-time," Pat says. "I started designing because I had to choose something that I could develop very quickly.."

Pat admits that she was actually very nervous at the thought of quitting her job. But her husband, Gregg, gave her the extra encouragement she needed. And as the business has grown, Gregg has continued to support Pat by quitting his own job to work full-time at Pat Sloan & Co. which designs and published patterns for quilts, penny rugs and rug hooking.

Design has indeed remained Pat's domain, and the ideas seem to flow naturally from the converted living room where she spends most of her working day. Her style tends toward old-fashioned, yet whimsical, quilts and wall hangings.

Pat currently divides her time between designing, managing her company and teaching workshops and seminars on quilting. She hopes to teach more classes in the future, as well as develop more books.

When asked what she attributes her success to, Pat responds that she believed she could do it ... I enjoy what I do, and hopefully other people enjoy it, too.
