Optional Early Bird Workshop
Arrive: Monday afternoon to settle in. We will leave for town at 4:30 pm for a buy-your-own-dinner.
Instruction: Monday Evening, Tuesday & Wednesday AM with open mixed media studio Wednesday afternoon to provide the time and opportunity to make multiple, ready to tangle backgrounds to take home or use during retreat. An indepth color presentation sets the road map for your color journey offering the essentials that turn complex color theory into simple, easy to understand vocabulary and exercises that will be the foundation to all color decisions you make in any medium, art, or craft.
You will develop rich backgrounds that bring to conscious awareness how to make color choices by understanding how value, warm and cools, lights to darks, how pure, shade and grayed tones interact to develop foreground, middle ground, backgrounds for botanical and landscape tangle pieces. Time will be provided for experimenting on your own. You will explore multiple techniques and paper types using and develop an understanding of the differences between opaque, transparent, and translucent paints. You will explore as many of the following as time allows: alcohol inks, watercolor, brushos, gouache, acrylics, marbling, and printmaking with Speedball ink, weeds and reeds, foliage, textures. Use a small press at the workshop and learn hand pressing techniques to use at home. Remember, essential supplies provided in the well stocked mixed media studio. Just come and enjoy a lighter suitcase.
Tangle-Inspired Botanicals Retreat
NOTE: Each student will have a 45 minute one-on-one time with Sharla to help you discover the journey you have been on, and where you are going. You will be encouraged to verbalize your goals and explore together recommendations on where to expand your skills. You will set goals to explore during the retreat.
Instruction: Learn how simple lines, C & S curves, dots, circles, expressive line, and more become tools to enhance and personalize your work and begin developing your own style of organics. Sharla introduces the fundamental components found in many tangles that easily evolve and morph into botanicals. Multiple Power Point presentations will lay the groundwork for hands-on exercises that explore enhancers, framers, textures, shade, shadow, color, design, and composition. The journey includes finding your unique visual vocabulary.
Exercises and instruction simplify the color essentials needed to make pens and shading choices using graphite, pastel pencils, color pencils, and color pens to develop a well balanced piece using value, warm, cool, light, dark, greyed choices that sing together when making the correct magical, yet very strategic, color choices. For a greater indepth study of color, take the Optional Early Bird Class: Color Exploration & Mixed Media Monoprints: Create One-of-Kind Backgrounds
At the retreat, you will learn how to Eco dye unique one-of-a-kind backgrounds on a variety of papers and fabric that offer organic information ready to tangle. Each combination of paper, botanicals, bits and pieces, and mordants creates a unique look. Then learn how to read the Eco dyed shapes and forms that turn the ho-hum into WOW tangled botanicals, land and sea scapes. Each eco dyed shape, form and mark has the potential to evolve and morph into organic leaves, florals, botanicals, trees, stems, backgrounds, foregrounds and more with the addition of shading and line.
You will leave with handouts for additional guidance at home, a filled notebook, completed tiles, and an extensive set of color, eco-dyed backgrounds for additional play at home, and a (3) month membership in a Facebook group that offers mentoring and encouragement to help keep you on track after leaving the retreat. |

Moving Forward in Expressive Tangling to Define and Refine 'Your' Artistic Voice
Moving Forward Workshop facilitators / teachers: Sharla R. Hicks & Beckah Krahula are artists, authors (see books list below), mentors, and Certified Zentangle Teachers who understand the struggle of artists looking to improve their work and are eager to learn the fundamentals to allow them to soar. Sharla and Beckah have a mutual ideology and find that team teaching offers students the best of each of them.
2019: September 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23
Wednesday Evening to Monday Morning: Arrive Wednesday between noon and 3:30, Instruction begins at 4 PM, with evening dinner, and Welcome introductions, and defining and exploring your personal goals for the retreat. This is always the beginning seeds that grow into a strong bond with your fellow students and teacher.
Suggested Attendees: Tanglers looking to advance their personal style and art, CZTs, Alumni, and Attendees from Sharla Hicks & Beckah Krahula Retreats & Classes.
If you are looking to find, refine, redefine, or even reinvent your artistic voice and unique expression with inventive ways to incorporate tangling, mixed media, %co dyeing, collage, gold leaf, and more through the art of mark making, repetitive patterning, design, composition and color. Then, Moving Forward's small intimate (8-10) students ratio with two supportive teachers offering gentle guidance and the occasional nudge that reflects each student's creative journey is perfect for you. AND, nothing can equal the strong supportive bond formed between fellow students.
If any of the following fit, you belong in Moving Forward
- If you do tangling and repetitive patterning as a way to reconnect to your art of earlier years and are struggling with how to make it your own.
- If you have a spotty understanding of the basics to create good art and often feel ill equipped to make the decisions to develop a work of art that stands apart from others.
- If you are seeking but have not found a way to develop your own 'unique' artistic voice.
- If you are looking for permission to just do art for art sakes and tap into the joy of the creative process.
- If you are an artist who wants to share in the supportive environment offered by our small retreats that encourages individual expression through your own unique creative journey.
Moving Forward Workshop
This workshop is a journey on 'how' to move forward in your art by developing a 'personal and unique' repetitive pattern style with a personal visual vocabulary of mark making, design, composition, and color choices that can be identified as 'your' work.
NOTE: Each student will have a 45 minute one-on-one time with Sharla and Beckah to help you discover the journey you have been on, and where you are going. You will be encouraged to verbalize your goals and explore together recommendations on where to expand your skills. You will set goals to explore during the retreat.
Each year the 'Moving Forward' retreat goes indepth into a few select mixed media techniques that offer learning opportunities that expand color, shading, composition, and design knowledge that helps to define and refine your unique artist voice and style.
This year, Beckah Krahula will be offering a unique blended color pencil technique that looks like an oil painting when finished. Here you will continue exploring how shading, color, and value choices influence a finished work of art.
Sharla will offer new insights and ideas on how to develop composition using narrative concepts, tangling, collage, color, and design elements that enhance and expand your choices as the work evolves and morphs. This is a more cerebral, controlled approach to developing a work. that incorporates multiple mixed media techniques. This indepth how-to approach will evolve and morph into unique organic art pieces that speak from 'your' voice and offer a narrative for the viewer to interpret. Create a one-of-a-kind fusion of mixed media tangled pieces, collaged with personal imagery and repetitive patterning, enhanced with a personalized tangle-inspired stencil cut on the Silhouette, character personas, shape, form, gold leaf, Eco dyeing and more.
This year's mixed media exploration will include creating larger sized eco-dyed works that incorporate new methods of setting botanicals, textures, bits and pieces to paper. Add an edge with pre-processing mixed media enhancements resulting in a unique look and feel inside the world of eco-dyeing.

What Students are saying about the Big Bear Zentangle Retreats:
Kathy Dudek, CZT: I was fortunate to sign up for the retreat with Sharla. It was amazing, from 9 or 10 in the morning til 9 or 10 at night. The only thing we really had to bring were our pens. If you get the chance to take her botanical series, you should sign up immediately. I grew so much in my tangling, the gourmet meals were incredible, and the sharing was so wonderful. This retreat was of the highest quality, and I've attended 18 years of retreats both in tangling and also polymer clay. My husband (a CZT too) and I plan to attend next year. Sharla put her heart and soul to make this a grand event. Ps her husband and Diana (a CZT chef) outdid themselves. Many, many thanks.
Jan Brandt, CZT: I whole-heartedly recommend this fabulous retreat! I attended last year and was thrilled with the variety of exciting hands-on opportunities to expand my world of creative experiences. Sharla is a generous and passionate teacher as well as a gentle, thoughtful mentor. Attend if you can!
Pat Mathes, CZT: Sharla Hicks has been an inspiration to me since I first took a class from her on Mooka Blues at Tangle University 2015. Her style was a fascination to me. I had the opportunity to participate in one of her retreats in Wisconsin . This was one of the greatest experiences I have had. Sharla openly shares her work and techniques. Very hands-on training. Intense work in technique, color, style . . . one of the best things is she doesn't stop after the retreat. She remains open to questions and advice afterwards. It was the best thing I ever did to further my artistic endeavors.
